Buxton Summer Club

Buxton & District Summer Club runs for the first two weeks of the summer holidays, for up to forty disabled children and young people who have physical and learning disabilities or challenging behaviour. Summer Club aims to give each child and young person an exciting time, enjoying activities from Trampolining and visits to the local fire station, to bowling and Sensory sessions!

We employ three play leaders to run the club, two nurses to ensure the medical needs of the children are met and that they remain safe while in our care, and a number of specialist care workers for those children with behavioural needs.

Additionally we recruit around forty young volunteers from schools to help out.  We train them in Makaton (a method of communication) and in managing challenging behaviour.  Our volunteers are enthusiastic and many come back in later years, the programme having raised their awareness of the needs of disabled young people.

All the children are transported to and from the club and some live as far away as New Mills.  Hiring accessible transport is very expensive but we feel it is essential to ensure parents/families a much needed break while knowing their child is having a good time and is safe at the club, which is usually held at Buxton Community College.

The club has its own management committee of local people and is a registered charity.  It costs around 12,000 to run the club for a fortnight and ensuring we have sufficient funding is always an uphill battle. If you can support us with a donation for next year's Summer Club, please get in touch.
