Making Space work with a wide range of carers and people who have varying degrees of dementia.  We run a number of groups across Derbyshire and are keen to take on volunteers who love to take part in conversations over light refreshments.


If you have a keen ear, love to hear people talk and are a warm and conversationally encouraging person: we want to hear from you.  
We especially seek people living in the Matlock, Ashbourne and Bakewell areas.

CHICKS charity – Respite Break Volunteer


CHICKS charity Derbyshire provide FREE five day respite breaks for children who are living in difficult or deprived conditions and will not have an opportunity to have another break in the year. The breaks provide the opportunity to have Fun with peers of their own age and build upon their self-esteem and confidence. Our week long breaks give children a chance to get involved in a number of new, exciting activities and experiences.

Respite Break Volunteer – you will be a positive role model who will interact with the children and allow them to develop and experience new challenges. You will jo8in our team of fully trained staff and up to five other volunteers from Monday through to Friday on a residential week supporting up to 16 disadvantaged children. A volunteer is expected to work under the guidance of our Respite Break Leaders to ensure the break runs smoothly and have an understanding the CHICKS staff will take full responsibility for the break and the decisions that need to be made. We ask that you are open minded, flexible and approachable and have and awareness of the safety and welfare of the children at all times.

Readycall Home from Hospital – 

Home from Hospital Volunteeers


Returning home from a spell in hospital can be a daunting experience for many people. The Home from Hospital volunteers are there to help people be more comfortable and confident when going home. Volunteers will be invaluable in supporting with small tasks such as shopping, transport to medical appointments or just being a listening ear. This is a short term service for up to six weeks to help get individuals out of hospital sooner and to help prevent hospital re-admissions.

Home from hospital volunteers – The service would suit a volunteer that may not wish to make a longer term commitment to offer support to a person. Home form hospital volunteers would support someone for six weeks. Volunteers must be flexible, friendly and like to spend time with older people.

Parkinsons (Ashbourne and District) – Social Secretary and Newsletter Compiler


Parkinsons Ashbourne is a small group that meets on a monthly basis. They organise trips out and offer support . The group exists to share their experiences and insights, and most importantly, to offer friendship at a time of anxiety and upset. Their meetings are lively and friendly, often with speakers or activities. They organise inclusive trips and social gatherings.

Social Secretary – The group is looking for a lively energetic person who is able to organise outings and liaise with the transport providers and the relevant venues. General administration is also needed. You would need to a be organised, interested in people, approachable and a good communicator. A good telephone manner as a lot of organising will be done over the phone. No previous knowledge is needed. You would work from home and if able attend the monthly meeting which is held on the third Thursday of the month. Support will be given.

Newsletter Compiler – The volunteer would liaise with the social secretary and other committee members to compile a monthly newsletter. The newsletter would need to be put together by the first of the month. You will need good IT skills, be a good communicator and work well in a team. Support will be given and you would be working from home.

Buxton Festival Fringe


We provide a showcase for performers and artists in a variety of venues, during our popular fringe arts festival.

Market Researcher - Buxton Fringe Festival

You will help the Fringe by asking audience members to fill in short survey forms. Be prepared to work flexible hours during the Fringe (5-23 July 2017). Reporting to the Fringe Desk Manager, based in Fringe Desk area, next to Buxton Opera House. Some evening work would be useful, but volunteers can choose hours of work.

 What are they looking for?

 Good social skills, extrovert nature, reliability, tenacity, enthusiasm, accuracy. Ability to take notes quickly and legibly would be useful. Friendly manner essential.


Practical Considerations

 People will work at their own risk, so for this reason, over 18's only. Some walking round Buxton required. Some outdoor work. Venues may have steps.


Reviewer - Buxton Fringe Festival


Fringe reviewers are required to select some shows from a list of 'First Nights', then write a review and email it to a particular address by 11am the next morning. Reviews should be positive and constructive in tone. Further guidance will be given.


 What are they looking for?

 Total reliability, ability to work to deadline, good writing style, diplomacy, good time management, good spelling and grammar. Specialist areas of interest e.g. music or art, would be an advantage. Willingness to ask questions of performers and/or carry out background research.


Practical Considerations

 Over 18's. Some venues have steps. The volunteer is responsible for getting themselves to shows. One free reviewer's ticket provided per show.

The venue are looking to provide a quality community space to deliver a range of positive social, educational, entrepreneurial and well being activities for all ages and community members from Matlock and the surrounding areas in a safe and healthy environment. They will be looking at issues such as personal development, through promoting and developing a range of activities that provide new opportunities and experiences. The Venue will work in partnership with community agencies to ensure our services are fully inclusive and environmentally responsible. We aim to create volunteering opportunities for people whilst exploring enterprising ideas to generate income for a sustainable future.

Stockroom Assistant  - They need to be Punctual and Reliable. Duties will include, Sorting stock, General tidying, Preparing and pricing items, Preparing and weighing rags for recycling, Steaming clothing prior to sale and researching items of value on-line for their eBay account.


Retail Volunteer – front of house – They need to be Punctual, Reliable and able to engage with members of the public. 

Duties will include, Serving customers, Producing displays, Maintaining stock levels, Till operation and Researching items of value on-line for their eBay account.
