Handy Van

The Handy Van Service was first set up in June 2008 and operates in the High Peak and the Derbyshire Dales.

The aim of the scheme is to ensure vulnerable people can remain in their homes and be safe and secure, this may include older people, disabled people, or people who have been burgled or who are at risk of domestic violence.

Our Handy Van person can carry out a FREE fire safety and security check within homes and if required fit security and fire safety equipment.

You can phone and ask for the van to visit your home and help with:

  • Home fire safety checks
  • Smoke alarms checked and fitted
  • Home security checks
  • Energy efficiency advice
  • Practical tasks (lasting no more than 2 hours) for example
  • changing light bulbs
  • securing carpets and rugs
  • removing and hanging curtains
  • checking stair rails are secure and appropriate
  • installing key safes
  • path and door access clearance
  • securing tap washers to reduce dripping taps.

Each household will be able to access this FREE service twice a year.

The Handy Van team: Brian Rogers, Mick Wood, David Peet.
Alistair Rogerson, & Claire Randall.

The service is funded DCC, Derbyshire Fire and Rescue service, High Peak Borough Council and the Police. Any of these agencies can refer people to the scheme

To Buxton VC,

Last week I contacted you with regards to a fault with my lounge curtains. I would like to offer my sincerest thanks for the assistance provided by your handyman service. I was sent a perfect gentleman in Brian, who endured endless trouble in fixing the curtains. His good manners and positive attitude, as well as that of the office staff I interacted with, removed all of my anxiety about having to seek assistance, something I am not normally comfortable with. Thanks to you all, your reassurance and good work have made this a positive experience for me and I am extremely grateful.

To Brian in particular, thanks to you for your kindly manner and a job well done!

Mrs I.C. - August 12

Thankyou very much. Brian always does a good job and is so helpful and cheerful and it is such a comforting help to know he will be along to solve one's problem!
